How the conversions work
Fractional → decimal: n/d → 1 + n ÷ d
Decimal → implied probability: 1 ÷ decimal
Profit: stake × (decimal − 1)
Decimal odds are the total you get back for every 1 staked, stake included, so they are the easiest to compare. American odds show how much you win on 100 (positive) or how much you must stake to win 100 (negative). Fractional odds, common in the UK, show profit over stake.
The implied probability is the chance the price says the outcome has. Because sportsbooks build in a margin (the vig), the implied probabilities of all outcomes add up to more than 100%. Remove the margin to find the fair chance.
Common questions
How do I convert American odds to decimal odds?
For positive odds, divide by 100 and add 1: +150 becomes 2.50. For negative odds, divide 100 by the odds (ignore the minus sign) and add 1: -110 becomes 1.909.
How do I turn odds into an implied probability?
Divide 1 by the decimal odds. Decimal 2.00 implies 50%, and -110 (1.909) implies about 52.4%. It includes the sportsbook's margin, so it is higher than the fair chance.
What do fractional odds like 5/2 mean?
The first number is the profit and the second is the stake. At 5/2 you win 5 for every 2 staked, so a 2 stake returns 7 in total, which is decimal 3.50.
Why is the implied probability not the real chance?
Sportsbook prices include a margin called the vig. The implied probabilities of every outcome add up to more than 100%. Removing the vig gives the fair probability, which a no-vig calculator can do.
